Three most frequent questions for the internist

How can I increase my energy levels?

The most effective way to boost energy is good quality sleep, proper nutrition—not heavily loaded with carbohydrates, as they can cause the famous "food coma" (postprandial somnolence), which is an excess of CO2 that leads to drowsiness. Also, the great resource of exercise helps to increase energy levels by secreting endorphins. We can make use of certain substances like caffeine for more vitality, without abusing them.

Small adjustments in lifestyle lead to big changes.

How can I improve my defenses?

Most of us actually have a very good immune system thanks to evolution. What we can do to optimize it is to have our complete vaccination schedule, maintain our ideal weight, exercise, avoid using steroids, refrain from self-medication, and ensure that any existing chronic disease is well controlled. By doing this for our bodies, we are providing them with the best defenses to fight off any pathogen.

What vitamins should I take?

In general, we do not need to supplement with vitamins; however, sometimes our diet is not balanced, we do not get enough sun exposure, and we have poor habits. For example, alcohol consumption reduces thiamine levels, taking metformin, although beneficial for diabetes, lowers vitamin B₁₂ levels, and not being exposed to the sun causes vitamin D deficiency. For these reasons, I believe it is important to consult a doctor, who will determine each individual’s deficiencies and the required dosage.

More than a recipe, medical treatment, even for a vitamin deficiency, is personalized. See your doctor.
